Van Wijngaarden Marine Services has a position available for Master 500 GT or higher with experience on workboats, willing to work on our Tugs, Shoalbusters, Multicats and Multi Purpose Workboats.

About this position

The Master is part of the crew on board and is in charge of the ship, her crew and operations. The Master plays a crucial role and is ultimately responsible for the operational process, the vessel and the development of the crew.

Your duties:

  • Lead and motivate the team, the vessel and the operations. You play an active role in the development of people on board and propagate our industry and Van Wijngaarden Marine Services in particular to support our manning strategy.
  • You have broad experience with the typical operations of our industry and are able to anticipate in changing situations and working methods.
  • You know how to manoeuvre the ship.
  • You know how to evaluate risks and set limitations based on the abilities of the vessel and experience of the crew. You know how to communicate with and convince the customer on required changes in working methods.
  • You have thorough knowledge of the safety system applicable on the vessel and you ensure the standard is maintained by the team on board.
  • You are familiar with works on deck. You make sure that officers in charge are trained and qualified and coordinate the works on deck and working with the crane. You judge the capabilities and competences of your crew and take care of a balanced distribution of tasks based on competences and requirements.
  • You provide clear written and verbal instructions to your crew in handovers and captain standing orders to make sure they operate within the agreed limitations. You make sure the maintenance management as laid down in Marad is well kept and maintained.
  • You are ultimately responsible for the safety of the vessel, crew and environment. You understand our SMS-system supports this and will help you to handle this responsibility. You work according to our SMS-system and help us to develop and improve our system.

You communicate with:

  • Crew on board of your vessel.
  • Customer representatives and project team on site.
  • Crew department regarding planning, work schedules, crew changes and manning strategy.
  • Operational department regarding vessel planning as well as daily and weekly reports regarding on- and off-hire surveys.
  • Technical department regarding ordering processes, maintenance, maintenance management, technical issues and modification requests.
  • QHSE department regarding usage and improvement of the sms system as well as accident and incident related topics.
  • DPA in case of major incidents.
  • Directors regarding overall management, development and progress and welfare.

Your profile:

  • COC Captain <500 GT, <3000 GT or all ships
  • STCW documents, COC
  • Multiple years of experience on contractors material or workboats as a captain.
  • Willing to supervise while working with instructions and procedures.
  • You contribute to a good working environment.
  • Able to give and receive feedback.
  • Writing and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English.
  • Committed to safe working and promoting safety on board of the vessel.
