Power Integration

For MPV Rijnstroom, ABB and Maritiem Elektro Zeeland (MEZ) join forces to deliver an advanced power automation solution. ABB provides the Ekip Link digital control system and advanced circuit breaker technology, while MEZ is responsible for the integration and implementation within the vessel’s complete electrical system and power management system. Together, these systems ensure safe, reliable and efficient electrical power distribution throughout the vessel while meeting DP2-class certification requirements. Through close cooperation between ABB, MEZ, Kooiman Marine Group, Van Wijngaarden Marine Services and Bureau Veritas, extensive simulation, testing, and validation sessions were carried out at the ABB Experience Center in Bergamo prior to commissioning.

What makes this contribution distinctive is the intelligent and future-ready approach to onboard power systems. The ABB Ekip Link system uses zone-selective protection to isolate faults without causing cascading failures, increasing operational reliability during critical offshore operations. In addition, the system continuously adapts to different operational modes, such as transit or DP operations, while predictive analytics support early fault detection and preventive maintenance.

The integration of hybrid power systems, including diesel generators, battery energy storage systems, and electrical propulsion motors, contributes to maximum energy efficiency and reduced CO₂ emissions. By combining ABB’s advanced electrification technology with MEZ’s automation and power management integration expertise, Rijnstroom benefits from a highly efficient and mission-critical electrical infrastructure.

Dutch-Built Quality plays a central role in this project.
