100% Dutch-Built Quality – Supplier Ultrasonic Anti-Fouling Systems

For the construction of the new Multi Purpose Vessel Rijnstroom, Van Wijngaarden Marine Services collaborates with Shipsonic for the supply of ultrasonic anti-fouling systems. These systems are installed to prevent marine growth on the vessel’s box coolers. This helps maintain cooling efficiency, reduces the need for dry-docking, and contributes to reliable vessel performance throughout its operational life.

What makes Shipsonic’s contribution distinctive is its environmentally friendly and non-toxic approach to fouling prevention. Unlike traditional solutions that rely on consumable materials or copper-based systems, Shipsonic’s ultrasonic technology operates using only low-wattage electricity. It requires no copper, no spare parts, and is designed for a service life exceeding ten years.

The effectiveness of the system has been independently studied by Wageningen University. The study concluded that Shipsonic reduces fouling by a factor of almost 50 compared to untreated surfaces. In practical terms, where approximately 1,000 mussels may settle under normal conditions, only around 20 mussels are expected to settle when the Shipsonic system is applied.

The system continuously optimizes performance by automatically tuning to the resonance frequency of the protected structure, while integrated monitoring ensures that the transducers remain effective at all times.

The modular design offers flexibility and future-proof functionality. Software updates can be performed by the vessel’s crew, while specific frequencies can be adjusted to avoid interference with other ultrasonic equipment onboard, such as fish finders and dynamic positioning systems. These innovations contribute to a highly efficient, low-maintenance solution that supports both operational reliability and sustainability.

Dutch-Built Quality is an important foundation of this project. Shipsonic’s systems are fully designed and built in the Netherlands, with a strong focus on simplicity, robustness, and ease of use. Developed in close dialogue with maritime professionals, the control units and transducers are engineered to provide maximum reliability in demanding offshore environments.

For Shipsonic, the collaboration with Van Wijngaarden Marine Services reflects a shared commitment to innovation, quality, and environmental responsibility. The project demonstrates how Dutch maritime companies can work together to develop practical and sustainable solutions, resulting in a vessel that is both technologically advanced and prepared for the future.
