On Saturday August 27, 2005, the maritime traffic on river ‘Noord’ had come to an abrupt halt. Reason for this was a launch at the IHC shipyard in Kinderdijk. Assistance was provided by the SCHELDESTROOM, Gouwestroom and the Vliestroom.
History
This time it did not involve a launch of a dredging vessel, as is usually the case at IHC. It concerned the hull of a real motor passenger ship (115.0 x 11.5 x 3.70 / 1.70 m). This passenger ship would later be named ‘De Zonnebloem’. The ship was owned by the eponymous BV and was specially designed and equipped for sailing passengers with a physical disability. While the Gouwestroom was still executing work on site, the Scheldestroom and Vliestroom left with the hull towards Hardinxveld-Giessendam, where ‘De Merwede’ would further take care of the completion of this special ship.
