The name of the ship already slightly reveals it: MP 3002, Multi Purpose: deployable for many purposes.
History
Multipurpose: heavy hydraulic deck cranes for lifting operations, gas oil and drinking water tanks combined with pumps for transport of these liquids, ‘C-locks’ for seafastening containers, a separate ‘crew-cabin’ for passenger transport, etc. A removable portal frame in combination with an anchor handling winch, bow roller and hydraulic guide pins, for use in heavy ‘overhead’ lifting operations. Ideal ‘tools’ during maintenance of, for instance, a ‘Single Point Mooring’ buoy. A single point mooring buoy is a floating buoy to which a tanker can be moored in the ‘open sea’ for loading or unloading. The buoy is held in position by being anchored to the seabed with multiple chains and anchors, which require inspection / maintenance at regular intervals. Certainly not a ‘children’s toy’. A tugboat will therefore always assist when mooring a tanker. The application of this system for loading and unloading started in 1959. Now, more and more SBM buoys are in use for very large mammoth tankers.
