2014 – AMERSTROOM

Project expansion Suez Canal (Egypt)

After some maintenance on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, the AMERSTROOM left Huelva for Egypt. ETA Suez was scheduled for December 6, from which the Amerstroom would assist dredger 'HAM 218' with all operations.

History
Sand, sand and even more sand. That was the view of the Amerstroom crew between 2014-2015. An international consortium of well-known dredging companies had been commissioned to expand the Suez Canal. The 'Ham 218' was one of seventeen dredging vessels deployed for this purpose. The 'Suez Canal Authorities' order was worth 1.5 billion dollars. The 'new' Suez Canal – with a length of approximately 50 kilometres – had to be partly parallel to the current canal, to enable vessels to pass each other freely. Parts of the existing canal were also made deeper and wider. The project was completed in 2015.
